Griffith University offers research scholarships to support international students who want to study in Australia. These scholarships are part of the Continuous Scholarship Round and help students by covering tuition fees and providing a stipend for living expenses.

The university selects students based on their academic achievements, research experience, and how well their proposed research fits with the university’s goals. A special committee carefully reviews and ranks applicants to ensure that the most deserving students receive support.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

General Eligibility:

  • Must be commencing or currently enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at Griffith University.
  • Must not receive financial support from another source that exceeds 75% of the GUPRS stipend rate for general living expenses. (Income unrelated to the HDR program is not considered).

Academic Requirements:

  • Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree (AQF 8) with First Class Honours (Class I) or an equivalent qualification recognized by Griffith University.
  • Must not have already completed a degree at the same or a higher level than the HDR program they are applying for.

Candidature Restrictions:

  • If applying with prior HDR candidature, must have completed no more than 12 months (full-time equivalent) of research at Griffith University or any other institution.
  • Must not have previously held the same or an equivalent scholarship unless:
    • The scholarship was terminated within six months of payments commencing.
    • It was awarded for a lower-level degree than the one currently being applied for.
    • The applicant is transferring the scholarship (as per Section 3.6 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure).

Government Scholarship Restrictions:

  • Must not have held a Commonwealth Government Australia Award scholarship within the past two years unless they have obtained approval from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)Commencement of Study.

Application fee

There is no application fee for this scholarship.

Note: The scholarship application process is separate from the research masters degree application process.

Griffith University provides four intake options each year for research students.

2025 Intake Dates:

  • Intake 1: 24 February 2025
  • Intake 2: 28 April 2025
  • Intake 3: 7 July 2025
  • Intake 4: 13 October 2025

Application documents

  • International Applicants: Provide a copy of your passport or a government-issued ID.
  • Academic Transcripts: Submit original or certified copies of academic records for all tertiary studies, whether completed or not.
  • Degree Certificates: Provide certified copies of your degree certificates.
  • Proof of Proficiency: International applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency, such as IELTS or TOEFL scores. If available, include certified copies of your English test results.
  • Statement of Research Intent: A comprehensive outline of your proposed research topic, objectives, methodology, and potential contributions to the field.
  • Professional Experience: Detail your academic background, research experience, publications, and any relevant work experience.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Typically, two academic referees who can attest to your research capabilities and suitability for the program.
  • Supervisor Agreement: Evidence of communication with potential supervisors at Griffith University, indicating their willingness to supervise your research.
  • Personal Statement: Outline your suitability and motivation for the scholarship.
  • Research Publications: Copies of any published research papers or articles.
  • Professional Experience: Documentation of relevant work experience, if applicable.
