Knight-Hennessy scholarship is a fully funded scholarship dedicated to nurturing a vibrant community of graduate students drawn from diverse backgrounds at Stanford University. Through fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and offering enriching experiences, Knight-Hennessy Scholars aims to equip graduates with the skills and mindset to emerge as visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders capable of addressing the world’s most complex challenges.

Scholars participate in an extensive three-year program that complements their graduate studies, designed to equip them with the leadership skills necessary to excel in academia, industry, government, nonprofits, and broader societal roles.

Annually welcoming a new cohort of scholars, Knight-Hennessy Scholars fosters a richly diverse community encompassing a wide array of disciplines, nationalities, perspectives, and backgrounds. Scholars collaborate on impactful projects, engage in transformative learning experiences, and forge enduring connections that extend beyond their time at Stanford University.

Scholars are awarded a comprehensive fellowship that supports tuition expenses for up to three years, commensurate with the length of their respective degree programs. Additionally, scholars benefit from a stipend intended to cover living expenses and academic materials. Furthermore, they receive a travel stipend annually to facilitate their journey to and from Stanford University, fostering a supportive environment conducive to their academic and personal growth.

Eligibility Criteria for the Fully Funded Knight Hennessy  Scholarship

There are two fundamental eligibility criteria for the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship.

1: Admission to Stanford

Firstly, besides applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS), candidates must apply, get accepted, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program. Eligible programs include DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD programs. You must fulfill at least one of the following conditions:

  • Simultaneously apply to KHS and a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, commencing both in the same academic year.
  • Have received and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, intending to start both KHS and the program in the same year.
  • Currently a Stanford graduate student planning to apply for a second full-time Stanford graduate degree program, with both KHS and the new program starting concurrently.
  • A first-year Stanford PhD student intending to apply to KHS, starting KHS in the second year of PhD enrollment.

Please note the following Stanford graduate degree programs are not eligible for Knight-Hennessy Scholars:

  • Applicants to the Honors Cooperative Program
  • Applicants to the Master of Liberal Arts
  • Applicants to the Doctor of Science of Law (JSD)
  • Current Stanford students applying for coterminal graduate study
  • Current Stanford PhD students adding an MA or MS degree within their current discipline

2: Regarding your undergraduate degree date

  • You must have received a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university on or after January 2018.
  • For the cohort starting in 2025, your bachelor’s degree must have been obtained no earlier than January 2018. 
  • For applicants with military service, the eligibility period is extended by two years to acknowledge longer service commitments. Hence, to join the 2025 cohort, military applicants must have earned their degree on or after January 2016. 

Note: Current Undergraduate students are eligible if they expect to receive their first degree by September 2025.
