Additionally, in exceptional cases, the scholarship may also support vocational training programs in Berlin or Potsdam.

A crucial prerequisite for the SBW Berlin Scholarship is that applicants must have prior experience working with a non-profit organization or social institution in their home country. This requirement highlights the importance of the applicants’ previous social commitment and their general motivation for pursuing such endeavors. The scholarship places a strong emphasis on the continuation and further development of social projects initiated by the recipients, both during and after their study program.

Upon completion of their studies or the funding period, scholarship recipients are expected to return to their home countries and continue their social projects within the non-profit organizations or social institutions they were previously involved with. They are required to further develop these projects and contribute to their communities for at least 18 months. Alternatively, they may engage in non-profit work in Germany, provided they agree to a notarized repayment plan. Eligibility Criteria for the Fully Funded SBW Berlin Scholarship for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies 

• Be an international student
• Applicants must come from countries that have a particular need for development assistance.
• Applicants must hold a student visa for Germany or a residence permit with the purpose of taking up or carrying out a course of study in Germany.
• Between 18 and 30 years old.
• Professional or volunteer experience in the non-profit/social sector, verified by a letter of recommendation from a social institution.
• Must not have stayed in Germany for more than 18 months prior to application.
• Must have qualifications for university entrance.
• Intend to work in their country of origin for at least 18 months after graduation or engage in non-profit work in Germany until the repayment plan is fulfilled.
• Able to prove a relatively low net income.
• Average grades corresponding to a German grade point average of at least 2.0.
• No first-degree family members who reside permanently in Germany.
• Must apply before starting university education or be fully enrolled in the first, second, or at most third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad), or apply for a master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.

• Students whose studies in Germany are already being funded by another scholarship are not eligible to apply. 

Required Documents for the Fully Funded SBW Berlin Scholarship for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies 

Applicants must submit the following mandatory documents:

• Qualification for University Entrance: Proof of eligibility to enter university.
• Net Household Income: Information about the applicant’s net household income.
• Academic transcript: Copy of the most recent school or university certificate showing the grade point average and a grade overview.
•  Copy of the highest academic degree (e.g, high school diploma or university certificate)
• University Admission: Admission letter to a university or university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) in Berlin or Potsdam.
• Language Proficiency: An internationally recognized language certificate for the language in which the studies will be conducted.
• Work Experience: All previous work, training, apprenticeship, and internship certificates and references.
• Letter of Recommendation: As mentioned, this letter must come from a non-profit organization or social institution and be submitted directly by them.
• Completed Application Form: Access to this form is granted only after the letter of recommendation has been reviewed and approved.
• Proof of Residency Status: Documentation showing that the applicant has not stayed in Germany for more than 18 months prior to the application.
• Personal Statement: A detailed statement outlining the applicant’s motivation, goals, and plans for the future, particularly how they intend to use their education to benefit their home country.

While not mandatory, it is recommended that applicants also submit the following additional documents:

• Letters of Recommendation: One or two letters from professors, school teachers, employers, etc.
• Proof of Income: Additional evidence of the net household income.

 All applications, certificates, and supporting documents must be submitted in German or English. If the original document is in another language, a translation into German or English must be provided.

Application Procedure for the Fully Funded SBW Berlin Scholarship for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies

When applying for the scholarship, applicants must provide proof of their social commitment in the form of a letter of recommendation from a non-profit organization or social institution. This letter should be submitted on behalf of the applicant as a PDF to application@sbw.berlin. After a careful review of the letter, outstanding candidates will be granted access to the application form.

• After a thorough review of the submitted letter of recommendation, candidates who show exceptional promise and alignment with the scholarship’s goals will be granted access to the application form.

• To ensure that an application is considered, it must be complete and include all required documentation.

Verification Process

After selection, if not already submitted, the following documents will be required for verification:

• Passport: A copy of your passport with a current passport picture.
• Visa/Residence Permit: A copy of your student visa for Germany or a residence permit for the purpose of taking up or carrying out a course of study in Germany.
• An evaluation report from Uni-Assist or other evidence converting grades to the German grading system.
• Updated Academic Certificates: Copy of your latest school or university certificate with a grade overview, if another certificate has been issued since submitting the scholarship application.

During the verification process, SBW Berlin and the candidate will finalize the details on how to conduct and oversee the mentored project. These details will become binding and the project description will be included in the scholarship contract.
