What does the Rhodes scholarship cover?

1. The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship that covers Oxford University course fees.

2. The Rhodes Scholarship provides an annual stipend. For the 2023/24 academic year, the stipend is £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month) from which international students will pay all living expenses, including accommodation. 

3. This scholarship covers the application fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford.

4. This scholarship covers student fees for a student visa and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), which enables international students to access the UK’s National Health Service.

5. The Rhodes Trust will cover two economy-class flights – to and from the UK – for the beginning and end of studies in Oxford.

6. On arrival in Oxford, Scholars receive a settling-in allowance and for those Scholars who transition to a second course of study in Oxford, they will again receive assistance to cover the fee for visa renewal and further application for IHS.

Eligibility for the Rhodes Scholarship

To be eligible for the Rhodes Scholarship, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria.

1. The primary requirements include academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to improving society. 

2. Each applicant must fulfill the citizenship and residency requirements of the Rhodes constituency for which they are applying.

3. All applicants must have achieved the completion of an honors bachelor’s degree by October. Also, academic standing must be sufficiently high to ensure admission to the University of Oxford, which has very competitive entry requirements. 

4. Age: Age limits vary between constituencies and range from a minimum age limit of 18 to a maximum of 28 by October 1st of the year following selection. In most constituencies, the age limit is 24 or 25. Please check carefully the specific age requirements for your constituency before applying.  Successful candidates will arrive at Oxford in October following the selection process

5. English language proficiency requirements. Alternatively, if you meet the University of Oxford’s requirements for an English Language test waiver, you may request a waiver.

Procedure after selection

Successful candidates will need to apply to the University of Oxford after being selected. Full details will be given upon selection.  

Successful candidates will be encouraged to disclose, in confidence, any medical condition or special needs that may require academic or personal support in Oxford. This disclosure is entirely voluntary and is requested only to enable Rhodes House to provide suitable support in Oxford and to make the transition to Oxford as smooth as possible.
